What is the Drum and Bass?
A commonly held misconception is that drum and bass is techno. Drum and Bass is NOT Techno music. Techno and drum and bass are both specific variations of electronica. Electronica is an umbrella for several diiferent music genres including; trance, techno, some hip-hop, drum and bass, house, etc.

Another common misconception (and one I am growing ever so close to shooting people for) is that drum and bass, or all electronica for that matter, is not music. If you think this than you better leave now before I trace you to your computer. Drum and Bass is an incredible achievement in technology and music. In previous centuries composers like Bach and Mozart utilized orchestras of hundreds of people to create "instrumental" music. Now, in the 21st century, the composers of our time such as Source Direct, Goldie, and Amon Tobin utilize the power of innovative technology to create music. Drum and Bass music inspires us, motivates us, and frees our mind's and imagination to wander endless landscapes of synthetic rythyms.

DRUM AND BASS IS NOT TECHNO G**-Damnnit!!

Drum and Bass in itself is merely a root-source branching off into several other diiferent musical genres. IDM, or intelligent, is a drum and bass style the incorporates complex mathematical rythyms and creates a seamless fusion of high order mathematics and music that is comparable to the great composers such as Mozart and Strauss.

Two-step or tech step is a quicker and less complex but equally atmospherical style. The beat may only be two steps but, artists such Technical Itch and Andy C are able to exploit this seemingly simple beat pattern and pack it with complicated samples and melodical rythyms that are as infectious as SARS.

Jazz and Bass is another style pioneered by artists like LTJ Bukem. This style is a little more mellow. It may have a beat of 160 BPM, but it is usually more of a chill-out kinda thing and it's very cerebral. Great stuff to uh..."read to".

Ragga jungle is what you may hear if you are at a club and there are guys with dreadlocks and fat bllunts everywhere. It's a very rastafarian-influenced spin-off. Ragga often has jamaican vocals and more "user friendly" beats. It's a very "fun" style to hear.

For more information on artists...
For those of you who are new to drum and bass this website is (and soon to be) filled with information on what's available. Do you like a certain type of music? Drum and Bass is filled with crossover artists. If you like heavy metal, there's Source Direct and Technical Itch. If you like jazz, there's Goldie, Roni Size. For you punk fans...well, in my experience punk fans have really liked Trance over drum and bass. Go look at CD reviews for more information on what you may like and just to see what's going down in the drum and bass arena...
